As the spring sports season kicks off across our beautiful state, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the true heroes of the game—the volunteer coaches, parents, and mentors who dedicate their time and energy to shaping the lives of our young athletes. Whether you're on the sidelines as a coach or cheering from the stands as a parent, we all play a part in creating an environment that supports our athletes' growth both on and off the field.
At its core, coaching is about more than just strategy and technique. It's about impact—about molding character, fostering resilience, and teaching life lessons that will last far beyond the final whistle of the season. I am continually inspired by the volunteer coaches who give their all, not only for the game but for the well-being of the players under their care.
What Makes a Great Coach?
I often think about the qualities that make a coach truly great. One of the finest examples in the world of sports is Coach Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K, the legendary Duke University men's basketball coach. With five NCAA championships and a legacy that spans decades, Coach K is known not just for his unparalleled success on the court, but for the way he leads with compassion, integrity, and a genuine love for his players.
What makes Coach K stand out is his ability to connect with his athletes on a personal level. He understands that being a great coach isn’t just about winning—it’s about building relationships, instilling confidence, and supporting players through their challenges. Coach K’s leadership teaches us that the best coaches lead with empathy and respect, creating an environment where athletes feel valued and heard.
But unfortunately, not all coaching is done with kindness. Many athletes, particularly young ones, have experienced the negative effects of coaches who use cruel or demeaning language. This approach often stems from a desire for results, but the impact can be devastating. Harsh words can create an environment of fear and anxiety, where players feel they are never good enough, no matter how hard they try.
The Hidden Cost of Cruel Coaching
Research has shown that negative reinforcement, especially when it involves harsh criticism or belittling, can have a lasting impact on young athletes. The stress and anxiety caused by demeaning language can lead to serious mental health challenges such as depression, eating disorders, and low self-esteem. These issues don't just affect performance—they affect the whole person.
As coaches, parents, and community members, we must recognize the power of our words. It's essential to create environments where athletes feel safe, supported, and encouraged, not criticized or humiliated. A player's growth comes not from being yelled at or belittled, but from being uplifted, motivated, and shown how to overcome adversity with dignity.
In this season of spring sports, I want to encourage all of us—coaches, parents, teammates, and fans—to reflect on the way we engage with others. Let's choose to spread positivity. Let's be mindful of the words we use, especially when guiding our young athletes through their toughest moments. Positive reinforcement, encouragement, and a genuine understanding of their unique needs are what help players reach their full potential, not only as athletes but as individuals.
Together, We Can Make a Difference
If you’re a coach, take a moment to reflect on the incredible influence you have. Your words, your actions, and your attitude can leave an indelible mark on a young person's life. Be the coach who inspires, who uplifts, who models character and integrity.
If you’re a parent or a supporter, encourage your athletes to speak up if they feel uncomfortable or hurt by a coach’s behavior. Let’s foster an open dialogue, where respect is at the heart of every interaction, and no one feels powerless or dismissed.
Together, we can create an environment where every player feels confident, valued, and supported. This is not just about winning games—it’s about winning in life. We owe it to our athletes, to ourselves, and to our communities to make sure that every child who steps onto a field, court, or track has the chance to thrive in a positive and encouraging atmosphere.
Let’s make this spring season one where we not only celebrate athletic achievements but also recognize the immeasurable value of kindness and encouragement.
Thank you to all the volunteer coaches and mentors out there—you are changing lives, one athlete at a time. And to everyone reading this, let’s commit to building a culture of positivity, one word at a time.
Warmly,

P.S. As we embark on this season, let's all take a moment to think about how we can be the kind of leader, coach, or mentor who leaves a lasting, positive impact on those we serve. The future is bright when we lead with kindness.
